29-01-2007West Aussies on AWT - Kuantan resultsOrthy may have a funny accent but seeing as he wins alot of stuff we'll claim him as a west ozzie...Great showing from Steve Stratfold too.
George Warren and the Ministry for Tourism of the Province Pahang/Malaysia invited a top fleet to this years 10th anniversary of the Monsoon Madness. 44 riders from 12 different countries arrived at Balok beach. The event started with a grand opening ceremony on the 18th of January. Each rider was greeted with a handshake by the Sports Minister of Malaysia, who expressed her deepest respect for the Watersport. "When the windsurfers are at the beach, they are normal people, but when they enter the water, accelerated by the steady Monsoon winds, they get totally mad.”
On the first day of competition the wind did not kick in, nothing but heavy rainfall at Balok beach. The competition took off with two long distance races (master blasts) and two downwind slalom eliminations. Pro Slalom rider Jesper Orth (AUS 10) dominated during most of the heats in light wind of only 8 to 16 knots on his CODE Red 9.0. Pawel Hlawaty (POL- 11) , well known from several PWA competitions, also demonstrated his light wind skills and finished in second place on a Code Red R2 8.3 and a SSR 10.0. Dan Ellis, former AWT (Asian Windsurfing Tour) winner followed in third position. He won the first downwind slalom heat but had bad luck in the second final because he got crashed on the starting line. The excellent organized event ended on the 20.01.2007 with an amazing closing ceremony.

19-10-2006Newsletter Oct06The wind is coming…
…the seabreezes are starting and WWA is gearing up.
Firstly we would like to thank and congratulate the outgoing Chairman, Dan Engdahl, for the great effort he has put in over the past two seasons.
The new committee for 2007 is Chairman Ian Grose, Vice Chairman Dan Engdahl, Treasurer John Grulich and a new face on the team is Secretary Rita Halton. General committee members are Bjorn Hagen, Geoff Golder, Tom Radis, Novak Jol, Steven Stratfold and Isaac DeVries. WWA would like to thank the committee members for giving up their time to help our great sport.
SMS Get Togethers
WWA members seem to have been taking a bit more of a casual approach to events over the last few seasons. So with this in mind we are looking for volunteers to help with the introduction of a new SMS get together program. If conditions are good the coordinator will email interested members so we can get together and have a sail in good conditions.
So let us know if you are interested in getting SMS advice of get togethers or if you are prepared to be the coordinator for either Social, Slalom, Formula, Speed or Waves.
At times we get frustrated waiting for winds or the rigors of organising a formal event so we want to be able to react quickly to get the best conditions and minimise organisation.
Rumours….
We have heard a few untrue rumours recently about a couple of our major events not happening this year and they are WRONG…
Just to clarify Nola is again running the Lancelin Ocean Classic and it will be even bigger than usual with a sizeable contingent from the East Coast. Leading up to the Lancelin Ocean Classic is the combined Slalom and Formula National Titles at South Beach. So book your holidays now for an action packed nine days from the 6th to the 14th of January 2007.
Events – Check the dates on the calendar.
For a change this year instead of a opening Season Party in licensed premises, we are having a Opening Season BBQ, so all are welcome bring along your family, friends, everyone is welcome. WWA will supply sausages and soft drinks. It would certainly be great to see more young crew attending.
New for this season is the Geraldton Blast from Pages Beach to Drummonds Beach, approximately 20kms. This is being run as part of the blessing of the fleet weekend and will have classes for under 20 - open - over 40 - women - wave gear only. It is forecast to be 25 to 30 knots steady SW, sunny and warm!!!
Wave Events will be on at Greenhead, Scarborough, Lancelin and the finale at Margaret River. Plenty of action for competitors and spectators, not to be missed.
Windsurfing Perth have again organised two action packed weekends with the Cervantes Speed Challenge. A heap of fun for all level of sailors.
Dan Engdahl is again co-ordinating the Perth Coast Run a great downwinder for all level of sailors. Start practicing now, this event will be spectacular and is a great showcase for our sport.
Windsurfing W.A. is this year running the combined Slalom and Formula Nationals. A lot of sailors from the East Coast are heading over for this event, so let’s make sure we have a strong team from W.A.
Along with the above events if you our members want it to happen we will also have the casual SMS Get Togethers. So let us know what you want and if you are prepared to be a co-ordinator.
GPS
Keep your eye on the GPS score board at www.gps-speedsurfing.com
as Chris Lockwood is number 1 – one of the fastest guys in the world and you can drag race him on any given day down at Melville – how good is that!
Chris is heading off overseas again to break some records. It looks like there is a resurgence in slalom and speed sailing right now – and why not – it’s a TON of fun drag racing your mates. The modern GPS means that you can race anytime. The guys over east are posting some quick times but we expect to see more West Aussies on the lists as we catch on to this fun racing trend.
WWA needs your help with running events. Please let us know how you can help.

RSX News From - Belinda Stowell - WAIS Sailing Head Coach.
It started with the dream of becoming a great windsurfer, with a chance of representing Australia in another sailing discipline, and taking up the best sport in the world!
I always seem to jump into things head first and then get up, take a big breath and have to start swimming so my purchase of the Neil Pryde RSX was a big plunge into deep water. The first step was to get Arthur Brett, a well known and very respectable windsurfer in his day,(and a particularly good friend!) to coach me and get me on track.
The next step was to find someone in WA to help me out with learning about windsurfing, RSX boards and to have a training partner out on the water. The word about town was all directing me towards one person - Steven Stratfold. He and I met on the water, found we have a similar sailing training ethic and he has since taken charge of the RSX board from Windsurfing Perth, with best wishes from Reg! We have been out putting as many hours in as possible on the river and having some fun doing it. I have had to take a few really big breaths after some great stacks in 20 knots, much to my training partners' amusement.... Steve, being a competitive guy by nature has taken to the RSX . After the initial steps of trying to fit it in his van,but not managing to, he has since worked out that the board is great fun to sail and although a handful in stronger breeze, its a challenge he is keen to take on.
It has been a steep learning curve for both of us to not only get me up to a level on the board, but to get to know the equipment and to learn how to use it. Arthur has been great when in town and has helped fast track a few things.
We have since managed to lure another RSX into our 'fleet' when the Tardrew brothers decided to move to Perth from Melbourne, because it is a great place to windsurf! Ben Tardrew is a sail maker by trade and has been sailing the RSX for over a year having been a 49er sailor, and Olympic campaigner.
A young 470 crew, Brett Sharpe has also been inspired by the new board and has bought an RSX too so that makes 4 of us out training on the river when we can.
The tough thing in WA is the lack of competition and lack of racing, so we (Steve and I) have been putting together a regatta plan which begins with a trip to Asia in a weeks' time to compete in China and Hong Kong in October. The sailors from those countries were top finishers in the Pre Olympics so it will be a chance to see how the top guys are doing things and learn as much as we can.
The first regatta is the China Open, followed by the RSX Asian Championships in Hong Kong. It will be our first regatta on the RSX and my first windsurfing regatta, so I am not expecting much in the results area, but will be on a very steep learning curve. For Steve, I think he is ready to race and looking forward to seeing where he fits on an international scale, and is a windsurfer with great potential.
Perth as we know, is a great place for sailing and windsurfing and the RSX, a really fun board to sail. We hope that the 4 of us will lure a few more sailors into the class and we can start to get some racing in on a regular basis. That said, we are keen to see any windsurfers come and race which would help grow windsurfing racing in Perth once again.
West Aussies Abroad
Jesper Orth has had a good run in Gran Canaria with a 20th in the overall slalom 42 results. . As you all know he can be a danger man but apparently his starts lately are crap – too late or over early. I’m sure the Severne guys will have a word as we are all waiting for his breakthrough. Make sure you drag race him for a bit of fun because Jesper is a good guide to the speeds the top guys are riding at.
Scott Mckercher is running ok this year– he is currently 7th in the overall world ranking. He would have liked a stronger result in POZO – I heard it was super close in the heat that took him out. Keep an eye out for Scotty as he will be buzzing around WA for the next month or so.

10-03-2006West Aussie wins Wavesailing NationalsMatt Holder did WA proud by bringing the Australian Wavesailing title back to WA at the recent National Titles in Gerroa, NSW. WWA sponsored Matt to attend the titles.
