Access to windsurfing locationsFew windsurfers would be aware of the pressures that exist from councils towards windsurfing locations. There have been several examples where local councils have threatened to restrict or cease windsurfing activity at beaches in the Perth area. Examples of this include Brighton and other beaches with the City of Stirling (1999), Point Catherine (Crazy Waves - see Feb 2002 newsletter). Swift involvement by WWA committee and vigilant WWA members has ensured that these great windsurfing locations, that we all take for granted, remain accessible to us all. WWA has been involved with the save Leighton coalition. There also exists the opportunity to create improvements to our sailing spots and create new sailing locations which have been previously inaccessible. WWA has been campaigning with the City of Fremantle to gain windsurfing access to an area of Port beach, which is otherwise banned from use of windsurfers. Scope exists for setting up formalised membership of local council "beach user groups" to help push the windsurfing cause to keep informed of any potential changes to existing access. Get in touch with the WWA committee if your interested in being involved. Social activitiesWWA has a great social calendar - check out this year's events calendar (link to calendar) with several subsidised social functions. Typically we hold a season opening party (drinks provided) usually held in conjunction with the first major event of the season, a Christmas party, social sailing days and of course the Annual Ball at the end of the competition round. CompetitionsWWA has a fantastic competition program (link to calendar). No need for stacks of gear, we encourage newcomers and there's always a rookies/novice division. It's a great way to meet people, find out the ins and outs of a new sailing spot and to really improve your sailing skills. There are place-getter and participation prizes at most events and a free beer/cold drink is usually put on by WWA at the end of the competition. See section on Competitions (link to comps). Competition entry fees are kept to a minimum to cover costs. Overall season trophies for all categories are presented at the Annual ball. Meet new friendsJoining WWA is a great way to meet new friends with a common interest. It's also a great way to get advice on that windsurfing move you're been trying to master or to find out about new sailing locations.
